Learning to make a slip knot Lesson 1

Crochet Hook of any size
Skein of yarn

Pull about 10 to 15 inches of the yarn from your skein. Do not cut it off.

Take it and drape it over you thumb and index finger.  Try to do this a little unevenly that way you have a short side and a long side. The long side is the one that is still attached to the skein.

Cross the yarn

Reach through and pull the yarn that is on the long side through the loop.

Pull the knot tight but leave the loop open so that you can insert your hook

Now just insert hook and tighten it nice and snug against the hook

Or you can do it the way I do. I just tie the yarn straight to the hook.
